Roman Imperial Coinage, Nero, Sestertius, Lugdunum, c. 62-8, imp nero caesar avg pont max tr pot p p, laureate bust left, rev. triumphal arch, surmounted by a statue of the Emperor driving a quadriga, flanked by Pax and Victory, statue of Mars in niche on left side, 21.05g (RIC 500). Some roughness, otherwise about very fine £150-£180

The triumphal arch on this coin was erected by Nero between 58 and 62 to commemorate campaigns by Gnæus Domitius Corbulo against the Parthians. Located on the slope of the Capitoline Hill, it was probably destroyed soon after Nero’s death in 68. The only known representations of the arch are those found on coinage
