A large silver mounted rectangular cigar box, the compartmented wooden interior with removable wooden dividers and blue velvet lining, the hinged silver cover engraved with presentation inscription: ‘Sir Alfred L. Jones, K.C.M.G. FROM HIS FRIENDS IN BATHURST’, hallmarked for London, 1902 and bearing maker’s mark for Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd., the box reverse also signed ‘GOLDSMITHS & SILVERSMITHS Co. Ld. 112 REGENT ST W.’, measuring 31 x 20 x 8cm. £600-£700
Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, K.C.M.G., was born in Carmarthen in 1846 and was educated at Jesus College, Oxford. He was the Senior Partner of the firm of Elder, Dempster, & Co., Shipowners; and was President of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Bank of British West Africa Ltd., and the Founder of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
Sir Alfred was appointed a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1901, in recognition of his services to the West African Colonies and to Jamaica, and subsequently served as a Member of the Tariff Commission in 1904. He died on 13 December 1909.
