William Arthur Humphrey was born in Reigate, Surrey. He attested under the alias ‘George White’ for the 9th Lancers at Canterbury in February 1879. He advanced to Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in September 1897. Humphrey was discharged, 3 August 1904, having served 25 years and 160 days with the Colours.
