Provenance:
Fawcett/Litman Collection.
Rev Daniel Collyer (†1819), parish priest at Wroxham from 1776 to 1801 and proprietor of a marle (carbonate of lime) pit at Horstead, had his marle transported by wherries via a specially excavated canal system. In 1798 he was instrumental in establishing a force of pikemen to defend Norfolk against the threat of invasion from France, but was himself prevented from joining them by the then archbishop of Canterbury (Saville, SCMB 1969, p.192). He died at Southwold
