A St John group of five awarded to Lieutenant J. G. Proger, Royal Air Force, late Welsh Regiment and No. 27 Squadron Royal Flying Corps

The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Serving Brother’s breast badge, silver and enamels; British War and Victory Medals (Lieut., R.A.F.); Defence Medal; St John Service Medal, cupro-nickel, unnamed as issued, together with R.A.F. observer’s cloth half-wing, Welsh Regiment collar badge, and St John badge and shoulder title, very fine (9) £140-180

John Guy Proger was born at Penarth, Glamorgan, on 15 April 1895. He applied for a commission on 26 November 1914, with a request to serve in the Cardiff Battalion of the Welsh Regiment, and was gazetted as a Second Lieutenant into the 16th Battalion on 9 December 1914. In July 1916 he volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps, and in the following June attended a months’ course at No. 1 Auxiliary School of Air Gunnery at Hythe. He served in France with No. 27 Squadron from December 1917 until 21 January 1918, when he was posted to the Home Establishment, becoming a Lieutenant (O) in the newly formed Royal Air Force on 1st April 1918. For some unknown offence, Proger was tried by Court Martial, found guilty, and dismissed the service on 23 October 1919. His medals were initially forfeited but later restored to him. Proger was made a Serving Brother of the Order of St John on 25 February 1970, by the Priory of Wales. Sold with full research.
