Sold with the recipient’s Commander-in Chief’s, 21st Army Group Commendation Certificate, to Corporal C.B. Riddell, 3 British Infantry Division Signals, dated 3 August 1945, stating: ‘It has been brought to my notice that you have performed outstanding good service, and shown great devotion to duty, during the campaign in North West Europe. I award you this certificate as a token of my appreciation, and I have given instructions that this shall be noted in your Record of Service’; signed by Field Marshal B. L. Montgomery, Commander-in-Chief, 21st Army Group. Also sold with the recipient’s Soldier’s Release Book, Certificate of Service and Notice of Impending Release. The latter states, ‘A first class NCO, excellent wireless operator & good at administrative duties. Hardworking & trustworthy & good in command of men. His character inspires the confidence of both his seniors & subordinates. Awarded the C-in-C’s Commendation Card for good work in operations in N.W. Europe 1944-45.’

Charles Balfour Riddell, a baker by trade, entered the Seaforth Highlanders T.A. in 1936, enlisting at Lossiemouth. After serving 1 year 313 days he was released to enter the Regular Army, joining the Royal Corps of Signals. When he was discharged in August 1946 his intended place of residence was in Hull.
