William Arthur Roberts was born on 6 November 1840. He was educated at the R.M.A. Woolwich, and was appointed a Gentleman Cadet on 7 August 1855. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 23 December 1857. Although Roberts did not see any active service during his Army career, he did serve in both the R.A. and R.H.A. for many years in India. He retired with the honorary rank of Colonel on 11 August 1886.

Colonel Roberts was appointed a District Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police on 15 July 1886, and at the time of the Golden Jubilee in 1887 was one of the five Chief Constables of the Metropolitan Police. He retired from the Police on 20 October 1895, and died in Kensington on 7 May 1906, aged 65. Sold with further details.
