Portobello Medals with Multiple Portraits, Capture of Portobello, 1739, a pinchbeck medal, unsigned, three-quarter length figures of Vernon and Brown facing each other, rev. Portobello harbour, three ships inside and three outside, 37mm (Adams PBvb 4-F; Betts –; MI –). Edge flaw, otherwise fine, extremely rare; only two examples recorded by Adams £100-£120

Provenance: Bt P. Bosco April 2002.

The diameter given for Adams PBvb 2-D is 36.4mm, but in the comments it is described as ‘Reduced size’ and the example in this collection (lot 1018) is 33mm. On the facing page, the diameter given for PBvb 4-F is 32.8mm, but it is meant to be from the same dies as 4-G whose diameter is given as 36.4mm; the diameter of the present example is 37mm. Could the diameters of these two types have been accidentally transposed?
