James Rankin attested for the Liverpool Regiment and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 12 October 1915. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 28 August 1917, and was killed on 30 November 1917, while serving with the 1st/5th Battalion. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, France.

Frederic Alan Rankin, the brother of James Rankin, attested for the Liverpool Regiment and served with the 10th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 January 1915. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Border Regiment on 8 November 1915, and was killed in action on 23 April 1917 whilst attached to ‘D’ Battalion, Tank Corps. He is buried at Wancourt British Cemetery, France.
