Ernest George James Neaves was born in West Dulwich, London in 1899 and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment during the Great War. On 9 August 1938 he was granted a commission as Pilot Officer on probation in the Equipment Branch of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and was graded Pilot Officer on 9 August 1939. He was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer on 9 February 1940, Temporary Squadron Leader on 1 March 1942, and War Substantive Squadron Leader on 30 August 1944. He relinquished his commission on 10 February 1954, retaining the rank of Wing Commander. He died at Worthing Hospital in 1980.
