J. Harvie was born in Saltcoasts, Ayrshire, and attested for the Seaforth Highlanders at Glasgow. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and died of wounds on 20 December 1914. He is buried at the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, France.
