William John Pine was born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight in July 1880. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1897, and advanced to Able Seaman in April 1900. Pine served with H.M.S. Proserpine, September 1907 - September 1908. He served as a Boatman with the Seahouses Coast Guard, Northumberland, August 1912 - September 1916 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in September 1913). Pine advanced to Leading Boatman in February 1917, and served at Southampton and Littlehampton. He was awarded a Royal Humane Society Testimonial on Vellum for saving life on 27 May 1916, and attempting to save life on 30 August 1916.
