Edward James Staddon was born in Plympton St. James, Devon in November 1878. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in February 1896. Staddon advanced to Able Seaman in November 1897, and served with H.M.S. Niobe, December 1898 - June 1901. He advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class in July 1904 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in November 1911). Subsequent service during the Great War included at H.M.S. Defiance, and with H.M.S. Mystic.
