William Ellis enlisted on 5 May 1838, aged 23 years 7 months, and was posted to the 4th Company 5th Battalion R.A. at Woolwich. He served with the 4/5th during the Kaffir War of 1850-53, having been at the Cape since October 1846, and returned with his battery to England in 1859.
