M.C. London Gazette 15 February 1919: Temp. 2nd Lieutenant, P.W.O. (West Yorks.) Regt. ‘On October 13th he, with his platoon, carried out an extremely difficult reconnaissance at the Haute-Deule Canal. He took them accross an area constantly swept by machine gun fire and himself went forward with one section to a house on the canal bank, from which a view of the enemy’s movements on the opposite side was obtainable. He remained in his position for several hours, inflicting casualties on the enemy, and, when finally forced by flooding to retire, brought back valuable information.’
