M. C. Danby was educated at Sherborne School, and commissioned Midshipman in the Royal Navy, 1 September 1945. He advanced to Sub-Lieutenant in May 1947, and to Lieutenant in July 1949. Service included in H.M.S. Jamaica 1948-49, H.M.N.Z.S. Tamaki 1950-51, H.M.S. Bigbury Bay 1954, and H.M.S. Dryad 1958.

Danby advanced to Lieutenant Commander in July 1957.
