L. H. Martin was a native of West Stowell, Wiltshire. He served during the Great War with the Wiltshire Regiment in the Gallipoli theatre of war from 22 November 1915. Martin subsequently served in the Mesopotamia theatre of war, and was serving with the 5th Battalion for the award of his M.M.
