Eustace George Keeping was born in Winchester, Hampshire, in 1889 and attested for the East Surrey Regiment on 20 March 1909. He served with the 1st/5th Battalion during the Great War in India from 29 October 1914 (his Medal Index Card states ‘Ineligible for 1914-15 Star’), and was advanced Sergeant on 6 November 1915, before being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Liverpool Regiment on 29 August 1917. Appointed a Flying Officer in the Royal Flying Corps on 15 February 1918, he transferred to the Royal Air Force on its formation on 1 April of that year. He served with the R.A.F. during operations on the North West Frontier of India in 1919, and took an active roll with No. 31 Squadron against the rebel tribesmen as a pilot of a BE2c Bomber. He transferred to the Equipment Branch in January 1923, and was advanced Group Captain on 19 March 1939, whilst serving as Deputy Directorate of Equipment. He served throughout the Second World War, before retiring in July 1945.
