Afghanistan 1878-80, 1 clasp, Ali Musjid (Lieut. G. F. Leslie. 4/Rifle Bde.) edge bruising, contact marks, nearly very fine £200-£240

George Francis Leslie was born on 16 July 1856, the eldest son of Major-General Leslie, R.A., of The Mount, Donaghadee, Co. Down, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade on 24 November 1877 having previously served in the Antrim Rifles Militia. He served in the Second Afghan War with the Peshwar Valley Field Force, and was present at the Battle of Ali Musjid on 21 November 1878. Promoted to Lieutenant in April 1879, Captain in December 1884, and Major in December 1894, he saw further action during the Sudan Campaign 1898, being present at the battle of Omdurman, and in South Africa during the Boer War. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in December 1901, and commanded the 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade from 17 February until 31 May 1902, being Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 29 July 1902). He was awarded the brevet of Colonel in December 1904, and retired on 1 December 1905. Following the outbreak of the Great War he once more offered his services and was appointed Honorary Brigadier-General on the Staff in March 1917. He died at Palmeira Mansions, Hove, on 10 May 1934.
