William Chalmers Mitchell was born at Castle Douglas, Scotland, in 1872. He enrolled in the Kimberley Regiment on 27 March 1896 and was a Clerk at the General Post Office at Kimberley. He was wounded during the siege by a gunshot, was promoted to Sergeant on 12 March 1903, and resigned on 18 February 1907.

Mitchell, whose occupation was described as Telegraphist and Postmaster, volunteered for service during the Great War at Tempe, O.F.S., in December 1915. He served as a Private (Telegraphist) with the South African Field Telegraph and Postal Corps, and later as 2nd Class Wireless Operator in the Divisional Signal Company. Shortly after the war he re-attested for service with the Nyasa-Rhodesia Field Force. Sold with copy service record and other research.
