George Smith was born in Corsham, Wiltshire, in 1865 and attested for the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment at Devizes, Wiltshire, on 27 April 1897, having previously served with the 2nd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment, before being discharged to the Army Reserve. Embodied for service on 16 January 1900, he served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 23 January 1900 to 29 August 1902, and was discharged on 26 April 1903, after 6 years’ service.
