William H. Brown was born in Christchurch, near Luton, and initially served during the Great War with the Bedfordshire Regiment. He subsequently transferred to the 9th (Service) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders and served with them on the Western Front. Brown was killed in action on the Western Front, 23 July 1917, and is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
