Benjamin Smith was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1872 and attested for the Durham Light Infantry at Bradford, Yorkshire, on 27 December 1890. Promoted Corporal on 27 January 1896, and Sergeant on 13 January 1900, he served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa from 24 January 1900 to 3 June 1902. He was discharged on 26 December 1902, after 12 years’ service.
