Rowland Ellis was born in 1871 and enlisted in 1st Brabant's Horse in Queenstown on 8 November 1899, and was posted to A Troop. He was discharged on 18 May 1900. He subsequently served in the Orange River Colony Police, 6 October 1900 to 31 December 1900; the Commander-in Chief’s Body Guard, 12 January 1901 to 13 May 1901; and the Transkei Mounted Rifles, 14 December 1901 to 12 April 1902.

Henry Ellis served with the 2nd (Wiltshire) Company, 1st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War, and is also entitled to South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902 clasps.
