D.C.M. London Gazette 12 March 1919 (details in London Gazette 2 December 1919):
‘For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in the attack near Spriete on the 19th October, 1918. He behaved in a most inspiring manner throughout the day’s operations. His company was left with only one officer, and he took over command of the left half of the company and ably led his men to their objective in the face of many obstacles and under heavy machine-gun fire. The services rendered by him at a critical period of the operations were of great value, and he showed marked courage and powers of organisation.’
