Walter John Paine a native of Staines, was born in 1892. He enlisted in the 5th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, in October 1910. Paine transferred to the 3rd Battalion in 1912, and served with them during the Great War in the French theatre of war from 18 January 1915. The Battalion moved to Egypt in October 1915, and then on to Salonika, before returning to France in July 1918.

Paine advanced to Sergeant, and was discharged 11 October 1922, having served ten years and 236 days with the Colours, and one year and 129 days in the Army Reserve.
