William James Henderson enlisted in Colonel Baden-Powell’s Regiment of the Frontier Force at Kimberley on 12 August 1899, and was subsequently transferred into the Rhodesia Regiment. He took part in the Relief of Mafeking, which was finally relieved on 17 May 1900, after which the Rhodesia Regiment was split up. Henderson was discharged at Pretoria on 18 October 1900, and then enlisted in the Special Cape Police Contingent on 12 November 1900, and served in that unit until taking his discharge on 30 April 1902.
