Walter Bowra was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 4th Volunteer Battalion, Essex Regiment, on 16 December 1896, and was promoted Lieutenant on 4 May 1898. He served with the Volunteer Company, 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War, and was promoted Captain on 6 June 1900. He resigned his commission on 4 March 1903.
