An inter-War M.B.E. and Great War M.S.M. group of seven awarded to Regimental Sergeant Major A. Stevenson, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, who was wounded during the Great War on the Western Front on 21 October 1914

Arthur Stevenson was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire, in 1889, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at Newark on 10 July 1907. He transferred to the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment three days later, and was posted to the 2nd Battalion. Promoted Corporal on 4 January 1912, and Sergeant on 8 August 1914, he served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 8 September 1914. Wounded by gun shot to the left forearm on 21 October 1914, he returned to England on the 28 October 1914, and was appointed Acting Sergeant Instructor, Army Gym Staff, on 15 January 1916, being advanced to Company Sergeant Major Instructor on 9 April 1918. Returning to France on 2 November 1918, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for Home Service at the end of the Great War.
Returning to the Sherwood Foresters as Physical Training Staff on 12 March 1923, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal together with a gratuity per Army Order 136 of April 1926, and was promoted to Warrant Officer Class I and appointed Regimental Sergeant Major on 2 January 1928. He finally took his discharge on 30 March 1934, after 26 years and 264 days’ service.
