Horatio W. Nelson was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and was ordained Deacon in 1885, and Priest in 1886. Appointed Harbour Chaplain, Bombay, in 1890, he joined the Bombay Ecclesiastical Establishment in 1893 and served with them in Aden 1893-5, at Ahmedabad 1895, and Bombay 1895-7. He served as Chaplain of the 2nd Division, Tirah Expeditionary Force in 1897. He had a further posting in Aden 1900-03, before retuning to Bombay, and was appointed Domestic Chaplain to the Bishop of Bombay in 1907.
