Joseph Lennard was born at Devizes on 4 October 1841, and enlisted into the 29th Foot at Devizes on 14 May 1860, aged 17 years, a draper by trade. He rose through the ranks to become Sergeant-Major on 23 June 1879, and was award the L.S. & G.C. medal with gratuity of £5 in General Order 7 of 1880. The announcement of the M.S.M. was made in Army Order 173 of October 1896, together with an Annuity of £10. He died at Wickwar on 25 February 1897.
