Three: Private A. S. Dobson, “Leeds Pals”, West Yorkshire Regiment, who was severely wounded on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, and died of his wounds later that day

Arthur Spencer Dobson was born at Templenewsam, Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1889, and attested into the “Leeds Pals”, West Yorkshire Regiment, on 4 September 1914. Posted to “D” Company, 16 Platoon, Section 13, he had just gone over the top on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, when he was severely wounded. Private Cyril Cryer, a “D” Company runner, found him in no-man’s land, and later recalled:
‘We rescued him from a shell hole, as we were going over the ground, we heard somebody moaning. He was very badly wounded, he couldn’t move and we somehow got him on a temporary stretcher and carried him to a first aid station, just a few yards up the line. It was all uneven and blown up.’

Dobson died of his wounds later that day, and is buried in Queens Cemetery, Puisieux, France.
