The Rt. Rev. Monsignor John Joseph Roche received a commission into the Chaplains Branch of the Royal Air Force, with the relative rank of Squadron Leader, on 13 November 1936, and served throughout the Second World War. Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1945), he was promoted to the relative rank of Wing Commander on 13 November 1950, and to Group Captain on appointment as Principal Chaplain, 9 January 1962. He retired from the Royal Air Force on 13 November 1967.
