His Royal Highness Prince Arthur William Patrick Albert, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was born on 1 May 1850, the third son of Queen Victoria. He was granted the freedom and Livery of the Most Worshipful Company of Haberdashers in 1873, under the Mastership of Alderman David Stone, who himself would be elected Lord Mayor of London the following year, and maintained an active connection with the Company for the rest of his life. He served as Governor-General of Canada throughout the Great War, rose to the rank of Field Marshal in the British Army, and received every Order of Knighthood possible. He died on 16 January 1942.
