David Meadon was born in Ireland and served with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders in South Africa. He was killed in action at Doornkop on the third day of the Battle of Johannesburg, 29 May 1900, on which date the Battalion suffered 1 Officer and 20 other ranks killed or died of wounds whilst attacking an enemy ridge as part of a force of seven battalions under Lieutenant-General Ian Hamilton, with the Gordons sustaining the majority of the casualties.
