Khedive’s Sudan 1896-1908, 1 clasp, Khartoum (3550. Pte. J. Hill. 5th. Fusers.) engraved naming, suspension claw loose, edge bruise, very fine £100-140

James Hill was born in 1872 in Oldham, Lancashire, and attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers at Manchester on 7 October 1892, having previously served in the Militia. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India, and then in Egypt and the Sudan from 19 January 1895 until 1 November 1898, and was present at the Battle of Omdurman, 2 September 1898. He subsequently served with the Regiment in South Africa from 4 November 1899 until 15 September 1902 (entitled to Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal, and King’s South Africa Medal with two clasps), and served 84 days’ imprisonment for drunkenness. He transferred to the Army Reserve on 31 May 1903, and was discharged on 6 October 1904, after 12 years’ service.
