Albert Edward Lane was born in Ryde, Isle of Wight, in December 1880. He joined the Royal Navy, as a Domestic Servant, in July 1899. He advanced to Cook’s Mate, October 1900, and Ship’s Cook in January 1910. He was appointed as Chief Ship’s Cook to the newly commissioned H.M.S. Iron Duke, in March 1914. He served in Admiral Jellicoe’s Flag Ship for the entirety of the Great War, including when she was Flag Ship of the Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May - 1 June 1916.

Lane advanced to Chief Petty Officer Cook, 17 May 1919, and was discharged to Pension in July 1921.
