William John Stevens attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment on 26 December 1893, and by the outbreak of the Great War had completed 21 years’ service, of which 18 had been spent in either India or one of the other colonies. He served during the Great War as a Sergeant-Drummer with the 1st Battalion in France from 13 August 1914 (also entitled to a 1914 Star with clasp and Victory Medal), and was killed in action on the Western Front on 27 April 1915, and is buried in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
