Samuel Furley was born in Oldham, Lancashire and enlisted at Chadderton, Lancashire. Serving in the 17th (Service) Battalion (2nd North Wales) Royal Welsh Fusiliers, he was killed in action in Flanders on 31 July 1917, aged 21 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the son of William Matthew and Elizabeth Ann Furley, of 20 Douglas Street, Oldham.
