Frank Amos Idiens was born in Westbourne Park, London and enlisted at Cheltenham on 25.9.1914, aged 23 years, 10 months. He initially served with the 14th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry before being posted to France in May 1915 with the 19th Hussars. Idiens transferred to the 9th Machine Gun Squadron on 7.6.1916 but was discharged 19 days later and granted a commission in the 9th battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was severely wounded by a French mortar bomb at Messines on 20.11.1916, causing a compound fracture of the left leg and compound fracture of the right foot with the loss of the 4th and 5th toes. In the opinion of the Medical Board it was regarded as ‘equivalent to the loss of a limb’. Permanently incapacitated, Idiens retired from the Army in February 1918. Sold with copied service papers.
