Benjamin Baldwin was born in the Parish of St. James in the city of Gloucester in or around the year 1879. During the Boer War he served with the 19th Hussars. After completing his period of service he left the Army and in civilian life became a Blacksmith. In 1909 he enlisted into the Territorial Army for four years, joining the 1st South Midland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. In 1914 he re-engaged for the period of the war, attaining the rank of Farrier Quarter Master Serjeant in 1914. Baldwin entered France in March 1915 and was transferred to Italy in November 1917. He was discharged on demobilization in 1920. Sold with a quantity of copied service papers.
