Joseph Hartley was born and enlisted at Blackburn, Lancashire. He died of wounds in France and Flanders on 15 June 1917 whilst serving with the 2/7th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. He is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
