Royal Society for the Protection of Life from Fire, 3rd type (1850’s-1891) silver medal (To George Elsden, F.E. Condr. No. 11, for intrepidity in rescuing life. August 15, 1862. Case 7439) fitted with ornate engraved silver ribbon buckle, very fine £250-300

Ex J. Lawson Whalley Collection 1877.

Awarded for a serious fire at the house of Mr J. N. Barrett, 9 Great Cumberland Street, London. Fire Escape Conductor Elsden first saved a little girl and a young woman from the second floor, and then saved the French governess from the back of the house. A further ten people, including Mrs Barrett, were saved by other rescuers, although Mr Barrett and his eldest daughter perished in the flames.
