Commodus (177-192), Commodus, Sestertius, reverse p.m. tr. p. viiii imp vii cos iii. p.p. s.c. (in ex); vict brit. Victory seated right on shields inscribing a shield set on right knee (RIC 440; C 945). Scarce, very fine/good fine (£60-80)

In March 180, the tribes of Central Scotland overran both the Antonine and Hadrian’s Walls. It took until 184 when this coin was struck to bring the situation under control but the area north of Hadrian’s wall was lost forever.
