D.S.M. London Gazette 1 January 1943 (H.M.S. Paynter). ‘For gallantry or outstanding service in the face of the enemy, or for zeal, patience and cheerfulness in dangerous waters, and for setting an example of whole-hearted devotion to duty, without which the high tradition of the Royal Navy could not have been upheld’.
H.M.S. Paynter was an anti-submarine trawler and, in March/April 1943, was part of the escort for Convoys PQ13 and QP10.
