Joseph Haynes was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in February 1850.

He was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire and enlisted in the Royal Marines at Portsmouth in October 1828, aged 18 years. Advanced to Corporal in June 1832 and to Colour-Sergeant in February 1837, he was discharged ashore from H.M.S.
Stromboli in April 1849.
