John Edwards was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1849.

He was born at Redruth, Cornwall and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S.
Java in June 1826. Gaining advancement to Bosun’s Mate during his time aboard the Samarang between 1837-41, he was present in her during operations in the First China War. Edwards was finally pensioned ashore from the Conflict in May 1856.
