Maurice Smith was born in Nash, Wolverhampton, and enlisted for the 1 st Battalion at Northampton. He was killed in action on 25 April 1915 in the Lancashire Landings at ‘W’ Beach, Gallipoli. The Lancashire Fusiliers were awarded six Victoria Crosses for this action. The casualties for this action amounted to 6 Officers and 183 men killed. Private Smith served in ‘B’ Company which had 64 men killed.
