William McLeod is confirmed on the roll as a Deckhand aboard the Steamer NORTHCOTE. It is interesting to note that the roll also contains the names of Angus and John McLeod who served aboard as Mate and Deckhand respectively, although it is not known whether or not they were kinsmen. A remarkably high proportion of the 35 crew were of Scottish extraction. The medal and clasp ‘Saskatchewan’ was awarded to all those who had taken part in any or all of the three main encounters during the suppression of the 2nd Riel Rebellion, namely those along the Saskatchewan and Fish Rivers and the battle of Batoche.
