James Nixon was born in St Lukes, Middlesex, on 8 June 1861. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. FISGARD on 18 September 1877, and subsequently served aboard GANGES (1877-79) where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class during October 1878, made an Ord aboard ACHILLES during June 1879, DEFENCE (1880-83), DRYAD (18 December 1883 to 20 August 1884) where he was made an Able Seaman on 1 June 1884, PHILOMEL (1884-86) and PEMBROKE (1887-89). He was discharged to shore on expiry of his ten year continuous service engagement on 7 June 1889, and was not awarded a Long Service & Good Conduct medal.
